**Christian Etienne in Avignon**
Restaurant Christian Etienne is located in the historic site Le Camerier des Papes at the base of the Palais des Papes (Palace of the Popes), the focal point of Avignon's medieval role as a center of secular and religious power. The carefully restored house is part of a complex of buildings dating back to construction of the fortified palace in the 12th century. The palace was subsequently claimed by the king of Naples in the 13th century and became home to the Popes who resided in Avignon during the 14th century.
This historical legacy provides an extraordinary setting for presentation of Etienne's cuisine, rooted in the family meals that his mother and grandmothers prepared in his youth from the exquisite produce of Provence. After serving his apprenticeship and early years as a chef in Paris at the Ritz and the Intercontinental, Etienne returned to his native Provence to open a restaurant dedicated to preserving and advancing the region's cuisine.
