John & Fish | | | John Soong was born in Tainan, Taiwan in 1963. He and Fish Hsiao, his partner of more than 20 years, were brought together through the study of Buddhism. After building a successful software company in Taipei, they began dabbling in photography in 2006 and joined the photo sharing site Flickr in 2007. Since then, their profile has had more than two million views. When they're not working, the pair travels the island of Taiwan to photograph birds. Their exhibit at Good News Café will display a selection of these breath-taking photographs.
Taiwan has more than 150 resident bird species, more than a dozen of which are endemic, and the island is an important stopover for hundreds of migrants. But you need not be an expert birdwatcher to appreciate the photographs, which have been compared to Audubon's drawings with the influence of classical Chinese paintings. John and Fish work as a team. John takes the photographs and describes Fish as his "eyes and ears." Fish also handles the day to day operations of their studio and exhibitions, as well as writing poetic captions for the photographs in Mandarin. John is a devout Buddhist in the Zen tradition and this informs his work immensely. Because of his spiritual practice, he is able to focus for hours at a time and, after years of patient and close observation, to anticipate the actions of the birds.
