This exhibit is cautiously titled, "Geoffrey Moss: Outsider. Insider." It is about my most recent landscapes, with and without canoes. That's the "Outsider" part. I have chosen canoes because they are so symbolic, independent, American, but subsequently they intrude, begging the viewer to ask, "What will happen next?"
I am passionately involved with drawing. It is the foundation of all I do. The gesture must be shown. Past the emotional wave of colors, I am ultimately concerned with the energy of the paint. The subjects, whether they are canoes or political metaphors, are simply a reason to abstract what I think and see.
The "Insider" aspects of this show are my syndicated, captionless drawings, Mossprints. This part of my work has trained me to take advantage of visual editing, cutting away extraneous moments, to choose precise metaphors. As a working artist, I am continually conscious that critically it is confusing to categorize all that I do. All the work comes from one place, and feeds on all that I pay attention to.
Unique to this exhibition is the presentation of both sides of my work. Not only do I have the luxury of throwing stones, but of painting them.
