Good News' Fourth Annual Community Benefit

Good News' Fourth Annual Community Benefit
Raises $12,275 for Community Organizations

Carole Peck’s Good News Cafe has presented donations totaling $12,275 to three community organizations designated as the recipients of proceeds from Good News’ Fourth Annual Community Benefit held on April 1.

In a presentation to representatives of the organizations on May 19, Carole Peck awarded checks for amounts of $7,275 to the Community Services Council of Woodbury, $4,000 to Girls Incorporated of Greater Waterbury, and $1,000 to the Main Street Theater Company in Woodbury.

Representing the beneficiaries at the award presentation at the restaurant were: executive director Sandy Ingellis and fundraiser chair Michelle Casey of the Community Services Council; executive director Doris Bernbach of Girls Inc. of Waterbury; board members Katherine Sendzimir and Wendy Westcott of Main Street Theater Co.; and Clara Stevens, board member of Girls Inc. and MSTC.

The Woodbury Community Services Council provides financial aid and direction to individuals and families in the community at times of personal crisis, and supplies food and clothing on a continuing basis to residents in need. Programs provided by the Community Services Council include short-term monetary assistance, the Woodbury Food Bank and Fuel Bank, and holiday sharing and family sponsorship projects.

Girls Inc. of Waterbury serves the educational and recreational needs of low-income households in the city and surrounding towns. The organization sponsors programs offered in after-school, evening and weekend sessions as well as summer day camps, with a curriculum covering diverse fields such as media and economic literacy, science and technology, college and career planning, visual and performing arts, and leadership training.

Main Street Theater Company is a nonprofit community organization offering educational programs in dance and the performing arts, as well as special workshops and a series of dance and theater productions open to the general public. Dancers from MSTC staged special performances during the April 1 event at Good News.

This year’s Community Benefit, featuring the theme “Let Our Good Fortune Benefit Others,” attracted nearly 300 guests for an evening of great dining, music and dancing. More than 40 business and private sponsors donated goods and services to be sold in a silent auction that generated additional funds for the event’s designated charitable causes.

Good News Cafe’s annual Community Benefit provides an opportunity for Carole Peck to join with her guests in giving back to the community that has been so generous in its support for the restaurant.
