My formal education was in art history - Vassor BA '79. University of London MA '81. As a painter I am self-taught, having moved to painting full time in 1982. I maintain a studio in the Erector Square complex in New Haven, and a summer residence in the Loire Valley. Most of my landscape work is done in France. I would say that about one half of my output is landscape, the rest is figural and still life.

As with my figural work, I try to base my landscape subjects in some sort of psychology, using the space and light as reference to allegory and metaphor. I want the viewer to bring his/her own experience to the pictures so that they can play off one another. This often achieved by a very high horizon line and a cross work of diagonal elements, which pull the viewer through the composition and then deliver then back again. Hopefully they see something different with each visit - depending on what they are associating with in their own lives.
