Morning Light IV *2009* oil on canvas
January 13th until March 8th 2010

Katie Danahy Samuelson s paintings are embedded with history. She paints abstractly with oil in a style that links her directly with 1950 s abstraction. She has the softness of painters like Joan Mitchell, with a touch of the gestural qualities of artists such as Lee Krasner. Abstract works by Samuelson contain a feminine wisdom that was lost during the time of Jackson Pollock or Barnett Newman. The work is quieter and much more sublime than the 1950 s ever could have permitted.

The painting s tranquility resides in Katie s color choices, and painting techniques. Her subtle combination of palette knife stroke and painterly washes, allude to setting suns, and clouds after a storm. However, she never gives the viewer too much information just a vague notion of a brief moment somewhere. What is left is the feeling of the ephemeral; an example of not a place but of a moment. Katie Danahy Samuelson s work is all about the feelings the viewer is left when looking at it and how that feeling connects with moments from the viewer s past.

Katie lives and works in Cheshire, CT. She is the owner of Samuelson Interior Design LLC, with an A.A.S. in Interior Design from Parson s school of Design and a B.A. in economics from Mount Holyoke College. She has shown at the Cheshire Public Library, Kafe International, Joseloff Gallery at the University of Hartford as well as in the New Haven open studios Index I.
