Contemporary art has used collage as one of its major mediums since the late 1800's, Henri Matisse found honesty in its simplified forms and Robert Rauchenburg used it to add texture and dimension to his paintings. Artist Joy Floyd enjoys both of these attributes, combining these textural and formal quality of her collages allows Floyd to find new riches in abandoned objects. These objects, such as paper, fabric and other small forgotten trinkets are the language in which Floyd s artistic dialogue occurs.
The combination of these objects with Floyd s touch, evoke a quiet calmness in viewers. Her palette of pastels contrasted by rich, saturated dark colors is harmoniously balanced, giving the work a very peaceful quality. The three dimensionality of collage also lends Floyd s work to that of a painting as an object rather than a picture.
Joy Floyd has been a working artist living in Hartford for over twenty years. She has been a member of the Artworks artists Co-Op, Mixus Collage group, and the Connecticut Women Artists League.
