Artist Maryellen Considine-Woolley will be on exhibit in her new show Where Memories Reside from March 10, until May 10, 2010
Good News Cafe will welcome Maryellen with an opening reception at the restaurant from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 14, 2010. The public is cordially invited to meet the artists, view their exhibition, and learn more about her works while enjoying complimentary hors d oeuvres and wine.
Emotion. Maryellen Considine Woolley's flat blacks, hard lines, looming birds and pain stricken eyes make her paintings filled with just that. Her landscapes feel both breathtaking and sorrowful, while her portraits tell the stories of long, hard and rewarding lives or the helplessness of youth. She paints almost unconsciously what her heart finds sublime. It is through that meditative state of mind that Maryellen can reach the raw senses of feeling she aspires to evoke in her work. Struck by inspiration from various landscapes and models, Considine-Woolley s imagery transposes not only the place and/or person but its ambiance. Art historically, the images have the heavy lines and brush strokes of impressionism and fauvism. However their rawness also aligns it with German expressionism and the angst ridden work of Egon Schielle. Perhaps, it is Alice Neel s very personal style of portraiture, we can connect Maryellen s work with; as both their paint and palette style choices seem directly related to the impressions left by their subject matter.
Maryellen Considine-Woolley received her BS and MS from Southern Connecticut State University she also studied at the Pair College of Art, The School of Visual Arts, and the Art Student s League. She earned a doctorate in Art Education with a concentration in painting from Columbia University. She has been an art instructor for thirty years, and she is presently affiliated with Southern Connecticut State University. She has shown at Ward-Nasse Gallery in SoHo, Art Shack in Cheshire, Seaside Gallery in Nags Head, PAAM, in Provincetown, Montserrat Gallery, Macy Gallery at Columbia University and the Legislative Building at the State Capital.
